Understanding Risks in Making Payments to New Beneficiaries
PhonePe Editor|3 min read|02 September, 2026
Imagine you are part of a buyer-seller group on social media where you like to buy things for your home. You post that you need a bed. Within minutes, you receive a DM from someone who is not a part of the group saying they have a bed available as per your exact specifications. They call you and insist on you making the payment upfront immediately as there are other interested parties. You negotiate with the individual and settle on paying half the amount in advance and the remaining amount on receiving the bed. They share a number to make the advance transfer to. When you try to send the money on PhonePe, the app warns you but you go ahead and make the payment anyway.
What could go wrong in a situation like this or something similar?
We experience transactions to new beneficiaries very often – understanding the gaps to take care of while making new transactions will help you stay aware of potential scams and keep you safe in your digital payment journey.
How does this scam work: Urgency and exploitation
- Create Fake Rush: Scammers create fake emergencies and sell a deal that will expire, a service slot about to be lost, or an urgent refund. This ticking clock then makes you feel compelled into acting fast by forgetting to check-in on your natural instincts.
- Bypass Built-in Safety Alerts: Due to a false sense of urgency that scammers create to finish the transfer, users often tend to override their instincts and ignore key security warnings on the PhonePe app.
- Demand of Full Payment Upfront by Unverified Sellers: Unverified online sellers on Instagram, Telegram or other social apps often insist on complete payment before sending goods or services. This leaves scope for them to disappear without any accountability once the transaction is done with.
The real impact of a single mistake
- Instant Payments: The key is to protect your finances – this comes with understanding the fact that once you enter a UPI pin, the transfer is considered complete and recovery of funds may be a cumbersome process or in certain cases impossible.
- Financial Loss: It is seemingly frustrating to lose money on non-existent services, fake items, or fraudulent processing fees with virtually no way to claim a chargeback.
Practical rules to ensure safe transactions
- Always Treat Urgency as a Red Flag: Genuine businesses and individuals will rarely demand an instant transfer without giving you time to verify the details. Urgency is the first and most clear red-flag.
- Match the Name Every Single Time: Before you hit pay, look at the registered name displayed on the confirmation screen. If it doesn’t match the person or business you think you’re paying, you can retract on the transaction.
- Factor-in Simple Human Typos: It is extremely important to double check details before making a first-time payment because UPI is instantaneous and irreversible.
- Receiving Money is Always Passive: As simple as this may be – you do not need to scan a QR code, enter your UPI PIN, or share a phone OTP to receive funds into your bank account.
- Never Ignore App Pop-ups & Notifications: If your payment app flags an account as high-risk or recently created, stop and double-check instead of dismissing the alert. Apps like PhonePe actively display pop-up warnings for high-risk numbers, spam tags, or newly created accounts.
- Never Pay the Entire Amount to First-time Beneficiaries: While making payments, ask for staged payments, pay-on-delivery, or use established platforms that offer clear buyer protection policies.
There are telltale signs throughout an interaction that seem suspicious to begin with – it’s a matter of being equipped with information and knowing what to do next!
