PhonePe becomes the First UPI TPAP App to enable UPI activation with Aadhaar
- Users without debit cards can also link their bank accounts to UPI now
- Several crore Indians can use UPI payments with this new onboarding flow
National, November 9th, 2022: PhonePe, India’s leading fintech platform today announced that it has enabled UPI activation using Aadhaar based OTP authentication. PhonePe is the first UPI TPAP App to roll out the Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding flow that will now enable several crore Indians to become a part of the UPI ecosystem, seamlessly and securely for the first time.
Under the previous UPI onboarding flow, a valid debit card was mandatory to set up a user’s UPI PIN during the UPI registration process, restricting access for a large number of Indian bank account holders who didn’t have a debit card handy. The addition of Aadhaar onboarding for UPI will do away with this restriction, and allow previously under-served populations to experience the convenience and benefits of digital payments.
In the new flow, the Aadhaar e-KYC flow will be made part of the UPI onboarding journey on the PhonePe App. Users choosing this option will only need to enter the last 6 digits of their Aadhaar number to initiate the onboarding process. They will then receive an OTP from UIDAI, and their respective bank to complete the authentication process. Post this, customers will be able to access all UPI features such as payments and balance check on the PhonePe App.

PhonePe was founded in December 2015, and has emerged as India’s largest payments app, enabling digital inclusion for consumers and merchants alike. With 41.5 crore (415 Million) registered users, one in four Indians are now on PhonePe. The company has also successfully digitized 3.3 crore (33 Million) offline merchants spread across Tier 2,3,4 and beyond, covering 99% pin codes in the country. PhonePe forayed into financial services in 2017, providing users with a safe and convenient option to buy 24-karat gold, and has recently also launched silver on its platform. Since then, PhonePe has introduced several Mutual Funds and Insurance products like tax-saving funds, liquid funds, international travel insurance, life insurance, COVID-19 insurance amongst others. Using PhonePe, users can also send and receive money, recharge mobile, DTH, pay at stores and make all their utility payments. PhonePe was recently recognized as the Most Trusted Brand for Digital Payments as per the Brand Trust Report 2022 by Trust Research Advisory (TRA).
