PhonePe partners with WBHIDCO to enable digital payments at Newtown Smart City

Visitors at The Naval Aircraft Museum can now pay using the UPI based interoperable QR code

National, June 17th, 2022: PhonePe, India’s leading digital payments platform today announced that it has partnered with the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (WBHIDCO) to digitize payments in Newtown Smart City. As part of this partnership, PhonePe will be the first digital payments partner providing a frictionless, contactless and safe payment option to visitors at HIDCO’s recently launched The Naval Aircraft Museum in the Newtown Smart City. This will enable visitors to now pay for their entry tickets through the UPI based interoperable QR code without worrying about carrying cash or exact change.

The Naval Aircraft Museum is one of its kind military aviation museum exhibiting a 29 year old decommissioned Tupolev Tu-142 aircraft of the Indian Navy and is just the second museum of its kind in the country after Visakhapatnam. This partnership enables the Museum to allow seamless entry with customers being able to pay for their entry with just a few taps on their smartphones, while also making cash management easier for the museum staff especially during peak hours.

Speaking about the partnership, Vivek Lohcheb, Vice President – Offline Business Development, PhonePe said, “We are excited to partner with HIDCO to enable digital payments for visitors at this iconic museum. Our solution allows the acceptance of payments with PhonePe or any UPI app, ensuring both visitors and the partner don’t have to go through the hassle of dealing with cash. This partnership is also very special for us, and we are proud to be the first digital payments partner for all HIDCO’s Newtown smart city  projects.”

Mr. Debashish Sen, HIDCO Managing Director, added “We are happy to partner with PhonePe to enable digital payment for ticketing at our newly launched Naval Aircraft Museum. This partnership will enable a seamless experience to the visitors by providing them a safe and easy way to pay for their tickets at the counter. We strongly believe that it will give our citizens yet another reason to support and experience our great naval heritage, especially with the Tupolev Tu-142 on display.”
